Flying can take a toll on skin, leaving it feeling tight and dry. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and use moisturizer while flying to maintain skin hydration.
Business or frequent travelers know that air travel can wreak havoc on the skin, leaving it feeling tight, dry, flaky and itchy. In addition, dry eyes and nasal passages can make the flight uncomfortable. Here's how to maintain hydration and keep skin feeling comfortable while traveling by air. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine to Maintain Skin HydrationTo stay hydrated inside and out, air travelers should avoid caffeine and alcohol, both of which can actually cause dehydration. Instead, drink plenty of water both before and during the flight. However, avoid drinking the water from the taps on the airplane; instead, bring a large bottle of water and drink it throughout the flight. Use Moisturizer and Lip Balm for Soft Skin While FlyingBefore the flight, apply a layer of moisturizer to the face, neck and hands to act as a barrier to the dry, recirculated plane air. Good Skin Labs' Tri-Aktiline Total Face is a new facial moisturizer that offers both wrinkle fighting and high-performance hydration. A good skin moisturizer should be used on the hands and arms as well – especially if frequent hand washing is taking place. Pack both in a carry-on for quick access. In addition, application of lip balm prior to and during the flight will help to maintain moisture in the lips and keep lips feeling comfortable and smooth. Treat Eyes with Eye Drops for Good Hydration In FlightFor travelers who wear contact lenses, remove lenses prior to flight to prevent eye dryness. Be sure to pack eyeglasses and a contact case in a carry on case for handy access. Even travelers who don't wear contact lenses can benefit from eye drops- just a few drops in each eye prior to the flight will help to keep the eyes moist and comfortable while traveling. Nasal Spray Keeps Sinuses Moisturized and Protected from Dry Airplane AirNasal spray is quick to apply and can prevent nasal passages from drying out. This is especially important for travelers suffering from sinus problems or illness. Pack a small bottle of saline nasal spray (available at pharmacies) in a carry on bag and use as needed before and during the flight. Also consider applying petroleum jelly just inside the nostrils to keep skin moisturized and prevent germs. Air travel can be drying on the skin. From the recirculated airplane air to the dry air inside the airport terminal and airplane, dehydration can be a real concern. Follow these tips to maintain moisture and stay comfortable when traveling by air.
